We continue to consider the financial side of the life of people of different professions. In the article we will talk about the income and expenses of the church and its ministers. Information from first-hand shared current parish priest.
How the church hierarchy is built
To become a priest, you must receive a spiritual education in the seminary. Previously, during a long ministry in the church and if there was a strong desire, such status could be given to an outsider. Now the rules have changed. Seminaries are now officially classified as state institutions of higher education. In fact, spiritual education is not very secular.
A seminary graduate can rarely get a standard job. Before him is a choice: to urgently get married and look for a place in the church, or to remain single and take a haircut as a monk. The first option is more familiar. After marriage, a seminarian can count on ordination (through ordination). He needs to write a petition to the bishop for further determination to the priests. The second way is implemented less frequently, since it is rather difficult to lead such a lifestyle.
The church hierarchy includes clergy and clergy . The first only help carry out the service. The latter are ordained and have the right to perform sacraments, they can control the parish. They are divided into deacons, priests and bishops. How many months, years, or decades a seminarian will spend on becoming a priest depends only on his abilities and obedience.
The parishes appoint their head. If there is a small number of parishioners, the priest performs the bulk of the work himself and with the help of his mother. If there are more people, they can hire candlesticks, cleaners, gatekeepers (they look after the temple). The priest will only come to the services.
They can be fired for misdemeanors that caused the church reputational and public damage. The culprit for the beginning can go to the parish in another village, after – on leave without compensation. In case of serious violations, they can be dismissed altogether.
How is the budget of the church
Cash is managed by the superior. This is the head of a legal entity – an Orthodox religious organization in a certain area. Temples are registered in the order established by the legislation of the Russian Federation as non-profit organizations. They have their own charters and accounting.
Parishes exist on donations from parishioners and walkers. People buy candles, icons, notes, and other items that order reservations (sacraments performed at the request of, for example, consecration, baptism, wedding). By purchasing a cross, a person essentially makes a donation for the recommended amount. If you consider this operation legally, then you cannot return the religious accessory, since it was received free of charge. What amount to install on certain goods, also decides the abbot.
In summer, church income is lower than at other times of the year. People are leaving on vacation and more engaged in personal affairs. The most profitable time is the church holidays, especially Easter, Christmas and Epiphany. In big cities, donate more money. In the villages, grandmothers can bring food from their own garden, some stubs and things. Temples of regional capitals can collect income of about 1-2 million per month. In Moscow – even more. Sometimes entrepreneurs donate building materials to churches, pay utility costs or provide other material and non-material assistance.
In addition to the usual donations, the money also goes to the current account. This is necessarily recorded in the accounting documents. You can spend the received funds only for the intended purpose. Directions for spending spelled out in the Charter.
What temples spend money on
Most of the money goes to the maintenance of the state. Approximately 40% of profits are distributed to wages and mandatory tax deductions. Modern clergymen are employed by labor law, have a formally registered position, SNILS and medical insurance. Documents and explanations regarding remuneration and taxation can be found on the ROC website.
For well-established work, the staffing table is drawn up, where all the employees are indicated: priest, priest, deacons, candles, cleaners, bell-ringers. There is no strictly defined salary limit for ministers. There may be recommended norms based on the Labor Code of the Russian Federation. The minimum salary is tried to be done no lower than the state established minimum subsistence level.
The second largest area of expenditure of funds – the acquisition of necessary goods for the temple. Here come the rules of the market economy. The abbot is trying to make purchases at the most pleasant price. The cost of liturgical sets, incenses and other items for worship reaches tens and hundreds of thousands of rubles. If the parish has a lot of money, it can spend money on replacing or making a new iconostasis. It costs from 1.5 to 10 million rubles. But even rich parishes rarely make such purchases. In village small churches, the iconostasis can be printed on photo paper. It will not be clear from afar whether it is icons or reproductions.
What is the income of the priest
The working day of the attendant is often not normalized. It is necessary to come to the morning service by 7–8 in the morning, it ends at about 11 o’clock. Further – work with parishioners and other duties.
The priest’s income is formed from the salary and cash for the requirements. The size of the donations for services to order is set by the abbot. Some churches set a list of prices at the entrance, so that everyone can preview it. In other cases, people are interested in how much they owe. Then the priest can tell the size of the donation or say “How much you can give.” In such cases, the person often begins to worry about what is wrong with the estimate, and gives a large amount. If we talk about borders, then one requirement can cost from 500 to 30 000 rubles.
The salary of a priest for a month can vary from 20,000 to 200,000 rubles. Beginners earn little. As a rule, about 20 thousand on the requirements and 15 – as a salary. The abbot has more income. In Moscow, 200 thousand may not be the maximum, but the average salary of a minister. In the central temples in the cities, the superior can receive from 1 million rubles.
What are the secular expenses of priests
Outside of work, priests can lead quite ordinary social life. They spend their budget on renting an apartment or a mortgage, on home improvement, gasoline, food, and recreation. Part of the funds is also deposited on large purchases. Often, a large item of expenditure is the maintenance of children, since in such families there may be many of them.
They pay for their own housing by themselves. Rare rich temples have office apartments for their employees. This is found as an exception.
About 15–20 thousand rubles can be spent on food . Depends on the region. As a rule, the cost of food is small, because some of the products can be taken in the church. People bring them for holding ceremonies of remembrance. Often there is access to cereals, bread, vegetable little, sweets, Cahors.
A lot of money is spent on fuel and car maintenance . This is due to frequent departures on the requirements. They have to take with them special clothing and items for ceremonies. A month for the maintenance of a car can take about 20 thousand rubles.
As for clothes . Cassocks and cassocks wear out slowly enough, so they are bought every 5–10 years. They cost 15 and 10 thousand rubles, respectively. Priest’s vestments and other specific accessories are purchased at the expense of the parish.
Many clerics visit the gym . This is not just a concern for health, but a vital necessity. Divine services go on for many hours, during which it is necessary to stand practically without movement. It requires physical strength and endurance. Over time, the loin begins to hurt and other health problems appear. Therefore, you need to monitor the physical condition.
According to the norms of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, ministers are also entitled to full leave of 28 days. It is important to agree in advance that the dates do not coincide with another priest who will replace him. The place and type of rest can be chosen at your discretion. Upon reaching the retirement age is not necessary to leave his post. It is not forbidden to work until old age. Leaving the church can lead to a health condition or other serious life circumstances.
